Pan Am Boeing 747SP Scale 1/200

Pan Am Boeing 747SP Scale 1/200

Email to a Friend

In the early 1970s Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) had no domestic routes and was in need of an airliner that could fly nonstop from New York to Tokyo. To meet Pan Am's needs, Boeing designed the 747SP (Special Performance) and, in 1973 Pan Am placed the inaugural order for ten 747SPs. Pan Am began regular nonstop service between New York and Tokyo with the 747SP on April 25, 1976. On April 22, 1985, in an effort to raise cash, Pan Am sold its Pacific routes and 18 planes, including all 11 of its 747SPs, to United Airlines.

This model represents N530PA Clipper Mayflower in it's original delivery colors. This aircraft was the first 747SP ever built, originally registered N747SP and was one of three aircraft used for certification of the 747SP, it was delivered to Pan Am on April 26, 1976, their third 747SP.

The Boeing 747SP shares 90 percent commonality with the 747-100/-200, the most noticeable difference being that the fuselage is 48ft 5in (14.7m) shorter. Other differences include structural changes in the wings, notably a simplified single-slotted flap system, and extended horizontal and vertical stabilizers. The reduced size and weight of the 747SP provided for increased range, greater cruising speeds, and reduced fuel consumption
