The F-15 Eagle was conceived as a pure air-to-air fighter, with a more specialised air superiority role, and also developed into a highly effective strike aircraft. As an air superiority fighter, the Eagle has reigned supreme. With improvements on its engines, missiles and avionics, the F-15 has retained its position despite the appearance of a new range of Russian fighters. Over the USA, Alaska, The Middle East, Japan and Europe, F-15s have dominated, and only with the arrival of the vastly more costly and sophisticated new F-22 Raptor will they be seriously challenged. In the meantime, they remain probably the best fighter aircraft in the world.
