Details of this Awesome Model

Supermarine Spitfire ML407, constructed as a Mk IXc variant at the Castle Bromwich 'Shadow Factory' in 1944, gained historic notoriety as the first Allied fighter to shoot down a Luftwaffe aircraft after the D-Day amphibious landings. ML407 enjoyed an illustrious post-war flying career and remains airborne to this day.

During the final months of World War II, ML407 saw active service with six squadrons of the RAF's 2nd Tactical Air Force, completing 176 combat sorties and clocking up 319 hours of combat flying. It was assigned to Flying Officer Johnnie Houlton at No. 485 (New Zealand) Squadron in April 1944 to support operations for the upcoming D-Day landings.

As the nearest UK mainland airfield to the landing beaches, No. 485 Squadron moved to RAF Selsey on 6th June 1944. During this pivotal moment in history, Houlton sighted a Junkers Ju-88 seeking refuge in the clouds. Using his new gyroscopic gunsight to take a longer distance shot, Houlton delivered a brief burst from around 500 yards, setting the Ju-88 alight and causing it to plummet towards the ground. The enemy crew escaped via their parachutes. Houlton and Spitfire ML407 entered the history books as the first Allied pilot and aircraft combination to down an enemy plane after the D-Day landings.
