The Douglas DC-6B made its first flight on February 10, 1951, and began carrying passengers for United Airlines on April 11, 1951. While it shared the same wingspan as the DC-4, the DC-6 had a longer, stronger, and pressurised fuselage. Its engines were more powerful and used a three-bladed propeller that could reverse pitch to help with braking. The DC-6B became the most successful model in the DC series, with the last of 288 aircraft delivered on November 17, 1958.
