BOAC Vickers VC10 G-ASGN – Dawson’s Field Hijacking 1970
BOAC’s Vickers VC10 G-ASGN was one of the most elegant British jetliners of the 1960s, serving long-haul routes from London to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Passengers admired the VC10 for its quiet cabin, smooth handling, and distinctive BOAC Speedbird livery.
On 9 September 1970, while operating a flight from Bahrain to Beirut, G-ASGN was hijacked by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). The aircraft was flown to Dawson’s Field, a remote desert strip in Jordan, alongside a TWA Boeing 707 and a Swissair DC-8. After passengers and crew were safely released, the hijackers destroyed the aircraft on 12 September 1970. The loss of G-ASGN became part of the infamous Dawson’s Field hijackings, marking one of the most turbulent moments in civil aviation history.
