What If Braniff Were Still Flying Today? Bringing the "Plain Plane" into the 21st Century
Posted by Malcolm on 10th Jul 2026
Hey everyone!
I've been working on a passion project lately, combining classic aviation history with modern aerospace design. It got me thinking: What if Braniff International had never stopped flying? How would their legendary, avant-garde style look on today's most advanced aircraft?
To answer that, I decided to recreate Alexander Girard’s iconic 1965 "The End of the Plain Plane" campaign on a fleet of brand-new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
I’ve put together four distinct colourways, and I’d love to know which one you'd want to book a ticket on!
? The 2026 Braniff Dreamliner Fleet
Here is a look at the concept art:

-
The Serene Blue: A beautiful, premium shade that feels right at home on long-haul overwater routes. It gives the 787's sleek lines a grounded, sophisticated mid-century vibe.

-
The Classic Orange: Pure, unapologetic Braniff. This bold, confident orange captures the exact energy of the airline's Texas roots and looks absolutely stunning under the airport floodlights.

-
The Retro Purple: A deep-cut choice. This periwinkle/lavender hue beautifully highlights the Dreamliner's composite curves, offering a unique retro-futuristic aesthetic.

-
The High-Fashion Yellow: Striking and high-contrast. By pairing the vibrant yellow fuselage with a clean white tail and black text, it completely avoids looking like a budget carrier and feels like pure luxury.
? The Design Details
I wanted to stay as faithful to the original design philosophy as possible while adapting it to modern aviation standards:
-
The "BI" Tail Typography: Kept the stark white tail with the massive, bold black "BI" logo to provide a clean anchor for the bright fuselage.
-
The Radar Nose: Brought back the classic black nose cone, a nod to the golden age of flight that complements the 787's cockpit windows.
-
The Registration: If you look closely at the rear fuselage, you'll spot N787BI—the ultimate flagship tail number.
What do you think? Which color is your absolute favorite? And if we were to take this alternate history further, should the flight crew wear matching Emilio Pucci-inspired retro uniforms, or should we design a completely modern interior?
Drop your thoughts in the comments below! As always, thank you so much for supporting my work and making concepts like this possible.
Cheers!
