Sally B is one of Britain’s most treasured historic aircraft and serves as a flying memorial to the thousands of United States Army Air Forces personnel who lost their lives during the Second World War.

The aircraft was constructed by the Lockheed-Vega plant in California and accepted by the USAAF on 19 June 1945. Arriving too late to take part in wartime operations, it later served in training, research, and aerial survey roles.

The aircraft was brought to Britain in 1975 and subsequently became known as Sally B. Today, it is operated by B-17 Preservation Ltd and permanently based at Imperial War Museum Duxford. Its distinctive starboard inner engine carries black-and-yellow chequered markings in memory of preservation founder Ted White.

Sally B also appeared in the 1990 film Memphis Belle, helping introduce the legendary Flying Fortress to a new generation.

Aircraft History

Boeing B-17G 44-85784 was accepted by the United States Army Air Forces in June 1945. After serving in training and research roles, it was acquired by France’s Institut Géographique National and used for aerial survey work.

The aircraft arrived in Britain in 1975 and was developed into the much-loved Sally B. It now serves as a flying memorial to USAAF personnel who gave their lives during the Second World War and remains the last airworthy B-17 Flying Fortress in Europe. Sally B’s official history
