History of this aircraft

The airframe 68-0222 rolled out in the early batch of C-5A Galaxies, Lockheed’s original heavy-lift strategic transport introduced in the late 1960s. This variant carried the early TF39 turbofan engines, the distinctive high-T tail, and the cavernous double-deck cargo space that made the Galaxy the backbone of long-range US airlift.

After initial USAF service, 0222 eventually transferred to the West Virginia Air National Guard at Martinsburg, joining the 167th Airlift Wing. The unit flew some of the longest and heaviest missions in the ANG system, including trans-Atlantic support flights, humanitarian airlift, and strategic resupply runs.

Like many early C-5As, 0222 underwent periodic structural strengthening and avionics updates, but it did not receive the full C-5M Super Galaxy re-engining. Instead, it remained an A-model through its career with Martinsburg.
