The Airbus A310-300 was a shortened, long-range development of the A300, designed for medium to long-haul routes with lower capacity. It became popular with airlines requiring wide-body comfort without the size of larger aircraft.

Hapag-Lloyd, a well-known German leisure airline, operated the A310 on holiday routes from Germany to destinations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Aircraft D-AHLA formed part of this fleet during a period when wide-body aircraft were increasingly used for charter and leisure travel.
