BONEYARD: Sold with possible faults, though they are expected to be minor. We saw that one small canopy section is missing. The aerial in front of the cockpit is also missing. We are not experts enough to fully inspect the model. Hence, it is sold for "Spare or Repair". We know many customers can find spares and repair this to perfection.

This Hobby Master Air Power Series 1:72 scale model represents a Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless of United States Navy Scouting Squadron VS-5, operating from the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5) during the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942.

This highly detailed, ready-assembled model is predominantly made of die-cast metal. Features include an opening canopy, a detailed two-seat cockpit, a spinning propeller, interchangeable raised or lowered landing gear, authentic armament, and a display stand.

The professionally applied markings recreate the blue-grey and light-grey finish carried by US Navy aircraft during the early stages of the Pacific War.

Aircraft History

The Battle of the Coral Sea, fought between 4 and 8 May 1942, was the first major naval engagement in which the opposing fleets fought through carrier-based aircraft without their ships directly engaging one another.

SBD-3 Dauntless aircraft from USS Yorktown participated in attacks against Japanese forces and helped prevent the planned invasion of Port Moresby. The experience gained during the battle would prove invaluable at the Battle of Midway one month later.

Hobby Master officially identifies HA0112 as an SBD-3 of VS-5 aboard USS Yorktown during the 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea.
