This impressive Corgi Aviation Archive model recreates Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc MH656, coded WZ-RR and named “Porky II”. The aircraft was flown by Lieutenant Robert Connor of the 309th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Group, USAAF, in the Mediterranean Theatre during 1943.
The 309th Fighter Squadron initially operated Spitfire Mk. Vs while supporting Allied operations in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. From April 1943, the squadron began receiving the more powerful Spitfire Mk.IX, which provided fighter protection for Allied bombers and earlier Spitfire variants operating across the Mediterranean.
This release is particularly notable for featuring the first USAAF colour scheme applied to Corgi’s Spitfire Mk.IXc tooling. The distinctive “Porky II” markings are also represented by the restored aircraft known today as the Suffolk Spitfire.

The unusual USAAF markings make “Porky II” a distinctive addition to any Spitfire or Second World War aircraft collection. Its colourful American insignia, historic Mediterranean service and association with Lieutenant Robert Connor set it apart from the more familiar RAF Spitfire releases.
