Aircraft History

VH-OJA is the first Airbus A350-1000ULR intended to enter service with Qantas as part of its Project Sunrise programme. The aircraft is named “Vega”, after the Catalina flying boat associated with the historic Double Sunrise services and the navigational star followed by its crews.

The registration VH-OJA holds special importance in Qantas's history, as it was previously carried by the airline’s first Boeing 747-238B. Its reuse connects the beginning of the Qantas Boeing 747 era with the airline’s next generation of ultra-long-range aircraft.

Qantas selected the specially developed Airbus A350-1000ULR for planned non-stop services connecting Sydney with London and New York. The aircraft has additional fuel capacity and is designed to operate flights of more than 16,000 kilometres and up to approximately 22 hours. Qantas plans to configure each aircraft with 238 seats across four passenger cabins and a dedicated Wellbeing Zone. Vega is scheduled for delivery in April 2027.
