After departing Pearl Harbor, the USS Yorktown (CV-5) promptly joined the Battle of Midway. The ship was struck by Japanese torpedoes at noon 1942. Subsequently, the USS Yorktown (CV-5) lost power and ceased movement. She later was sunk after a torpedo attack by a Japanese submarine.
